Air Fryer French Fries

French fries, a classic in American cuisine! Whether it's a burger, hotdog, or a regular weekday meal with chicken cutlets, pork chops, or fish, fries add that perfect touch to make any dish shine.
You can make a restaurant quality fry at home with three ingredients: a good oil, a good potato, and a pinch of salt. The air fryer reduces the overall fat quantity – not that good fat should be totally avoided – but keeps the comforting texture and bite of a fry.

Ingredients

  • 500 grams Potatoes
  • 1 tbsp Olive oil
  • a pinch salt

Instructions

Preparation

  • Take your potato and cut into small 1cm wide pieces lengthways. Then do the same for each slice, leaving a long, thin stick of potato. This is called a ‘Julienne’ chop.
  • The potatoes need to be washed Fill a bowl with cold water and submerge the potato. Lots of starch comes out in the water since these are cut so thin, the surface area is large. Refill the water until it no longer goes cloudy.
  • Now before cooking the potatoes want to be dry and coated in a fat. A clean tea towel is ideal for drying, or you can use kitchen paper. Make sure these are as dry as possible then transfer into a mixing bowl with a bit of olive oil or melted fat. Add a pinch of salt and toss the potato in the oil until it’s evenly coated.
  • Optionally here you can add additional spices, smoked paprika is a personal recommendation. Maybe even a dash of spicy red chilli.

Cooking

  • To cook, pre-heat the air fryer at 170C for 2 minutes on a roast setting. Once hot, add potatoes to the tray and roast at 170 for 5 minutes. Because they’re so thinly cut, we avoid overcooking the potato with a short roast.
  • Now, switch to the air fry setting, increase the temperature to 210, shake the tray well and cook for 5 minutes. Give another shake to ensure we are cooking the fries as evenly as possible. Cook for a final five minutes.
  • Take out and let then rest a minute, try a cheeky fry understand that they are cooked to your liking, Ideally, a crisp bite to the teeth. If they need a minute or two more, put them in again.
  • Take them out and plate them with your main or enjoy as a snack.

Notes

Storage

To Freeze
We want to avoid freezer-burn, and over cooking.
To avoid over cooking, after the first 5 minutes of air frying, take the fries to one side and allow to cool. This prevents overcooking when we re-heat.
Prevent freezer-burn by placing the fries in a freezer bag, adding a bit more oil, shaking to ensure an even coat, and removing as much air as possible from the bag before placing it in the freezer.
To Fridge
For fridge storage (ideal for a day at most), place the fries in Tupperware with a touch of oil, approximately 5 minutes before they are fully cooked. This way, they’re ready to be a delicious side for tomorrow’s meal.

Air frying Tips

With thin fries it’s a good idea to try and remove the tray and shake every 3 minutes. Move those fries from the edges to the centre for an even coating – trust me, it makes all the difference!
